Eighteeen killed as Indian train rams taxi

CHENNAI, India, Oct. 31 (Reuters) - Eighteen people, including 14 women farm labourers, were killed when a passenger train hit their shared taxi as they travelled to work in southern India on Tuesday, officials said. The crash occured in Tamil Nadu state, near the temple town of Kancheepuram, about 60 km (35 miles) from the state capital Chennai, as the large three-wheeled taxi, known locally as a "share auto-rickshaw", crossed the railway line. "The tragedy happened when the auto driver was negotiating an unmanned level-crossing," Kancheepuram district police superintendent A. Amalraj told Reuters. "There are no survivors and the auto was mangled."
