July 11 (Reuters) - Pakistani security forces are securing the last parts of a mosque and school complex in the capital a day after an assault killed a rebel cleric, dozens of Islamist fighters and eight soldiers.

Following are some of the major incidents of violence in the country in recent years. Most of the bomb and grenade attacks are believed to have been carried out by sectarian or al Qaeda-linked militants. Numerous smaller attacks have taken place.

May 8, 2002 - A car bomb in the southern city of Karachi kills 14 people, including 11 French engineers.

June 14 - A car bomb outside the U.S. consulate in Karachi kills 12 Pakistanis.

July 4, 2003 - Up to 47 people are killed in a suicide bomb attack on a Shi'ite mosque in the southwestern city of Quetta.

Dec. 25 - A suicide bomb attack on President Pervez Musharraf's motorcade kills 15. He is unhurt. He escaped a similar attack on Dec. 14.

March/June 2004 - More than 200 people are killed in the tribal South Waziristan region in clashes between troops and militants.

March 2 - At least 44 people are killed when suspected Sunni militants attack a Shi'ite procession in Quetta.

May 31 - A blast in a Shi'ite mosque in Karachi kills 20.

Oct. 1 - A suicide bomber in a Shi'ite mosque in the eastern city of Sialkot kills 25.

Oct. 7 - At least 40 people are killed when a car bomb explodes at a rally in Multan commemorating the assassination of a Sunni Muslim leader.

March 20, 2005 - Forty-three people are killed when a bomb explodes at a Shi'ite shrine in Baluchistan province.

May 27 - Nineteen people are killed in a suicide bombing at a shrine in Islamabad.

March 2006 - About 200 tribesmen are killed in clashes in North Waziristan after they answer a call to arms by militant clerics following a special forces assault on an al Qaeda camp.

April 11 - Fifty-seven people are killed in a suicide bomb attack on a Sunni congregation in a Karachi park.

Oct. 30 - Army helicopters kill about 80 suspected militants in an attack on a religious school run by a pro-Taliban commander in the Bajaur region bordering Afghanistan.

Nov. 8 - A suicide bomber kills 42 soldiers at an army training ground in North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Jan. 27, 2007 - A suicide bomb attack near a mosque in the city of of Peshawar kills 15, most of them police officers.

Feb. 17 - A suicide bomber kills 16 people, including a judge, in Quetta.

April 28 - A suicide bomber blows himself up at a gathering in Charsadda in NWFP, killing 28. Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao escapes with bruises.

May 12-13 - About 40 people are killed in Karachi in clashes between pro-government and opposition activists as the country's suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry tries to hold a rally.

May 15 - A suicide bomber blows himself in a Peshawar restaurant, killing 25 people.

July 10 - Pakistani forces storm the Lal Masjid mosque in Islamabad, killing up to 50 militants. At least 21 people were in a week-long standoff that preceded the assault.

July 11 - Forces try to secure remaining parts of the Lal Masjid mosque-madrasa compound. Final death toll not yet known.
