BERLIN, Dec 17 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday the pledges made by industrial nations at the U.N. Climate Conference in Copenhagen have not been sufficient and said the U.S. offer was unambitious.

In a speech to parliament before travelling to the conference, Merkel said the news from Copenhagen had not been good so far and she warned a failure to reach an agreement would be damaging.

"The news that we've been receiving is not good," she said.

"I must say very honestly, that the United States offer to cut (C02 emissions) by 4 percent compared to 1990 levels is not ambitious." (Reporting by Noah Barkin and Erik Kirschbaum)
