BAGHDAD, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Five U.S. soldiers have been killed in combat in Iraq's volatile Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Sunday.

The military said the four soldiers and one Marine died on Saturday "from wounds sustained due to enemy action while operating in al-Anbar province".

Anbar, heartland of the Sunni insurgency against the U.S. military and the Shi'ite-led government in Baghdad, is the deadliest region in Iraq for U.S. soldiers.

The U.S. military suffered one of its deadliest days in Iraq on Saturday, when 19 soldiers were killed -- 12 in a helicopter crash, five in clashes with gunmen in the holy Shi'ite city of Kerbala, and two in separate incidents.

Children stand in the compound of a relative's residence, at which they are now staying after their families left their homes in Baghdad for Arbil, about 350 km (220 miles) north of Baghdad, January 19, 2007. Tens of thousands of people have fled Baghdad, the epicentre of violence in Iraq. The United Nations, launching an appeal for aid for Iraqis who have fled their homes or left the country, said this month about one in eight Iraqis is now displaced. Many, including non-Kurds, have taken refuge in Kurdistan -- a largely autonomous region in the northern mountains that has been a haven from attacks plaguing other areas since the U.S. invasion of 2003.
