COLOMBO, April 24 (Reuters) - The Sri Lankan military denied that Tamil Tiger rebels had carried out an air raid on an air force base in the north of the island early on Tuesday. "Nothing like that happened," air force spokesman Group Captain Ajantha de Silva said.

A spokesman for the Media Centre for National Security said: "We totally deny the air strike, but there were some artillery rounds fired from Poonarin area. They also did not cause any damage".

The Tigers said two of their aircraft dropped eight bombs on a military air base early on Tuesday.
