Kashmiris protest youth's death in Indian custody

SRINAGAR, India, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Several thousand people demonstrated in Kashmir on Sunday, accusing the Indian army of killing a Muslim youth in its custody, police and witnesses said. Nearly 2,000 protesters shouting "down with Indian forces" gathered in Pakharpora village, about 30 km (19 miles) west of Srinagar, the region's main city, a day after police found the body of 19-year-old Mohammad Maqbool Dar near an army camp. "Maqbool was arrested by the army on Saturday and he was tortured to death in custody," the dead man's father, Mohammad Ramzan Dar, told reporters. He was buried on Saturday. The army said a investigation into the incident had been ordered. Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel A. K. Mathur told Reuters that Mohammad Maqbool "was a militant supporter and we had detained him for questioning". He said troops had taken him to hospital after he said he felt unwell and he was declared dead by doctors. "The army has ordered an inquiry," Mathur added.
