NEW DELHI, Jan 1 (Reuters) - An angry mob clashed with police near New Delhi on Monday over the grisly discovery of the remains of 17 people, including a dozen children, who had been missing for years.

Police found skulls and other bones buried in the backyard of a house in the industrial town of Noida last week, and have arrested the owner of the house and his domestic servant.

The crowd of angry relatives accused the police of failing to act when they reported the disappearances and said they believed the victims, mainly female, had been sexually abused before being killed.

Police used baton charges to break up the crowd, who threw stones and plastic chairs at them in protest against the erection of barricades round the house as part of their search for evidence.

Police say the servant has confessed that he and his master lured the victims into the house with toffees and chocolates before raping and killing them.

Under Indian law, confessions made in police custody are not admissible as evidence unless they are repeated in court.

The government of Uttar Pradesh, the crime-infested northern state where Noida is located, has ordered a high-level investigation and suspended five policemen for negligence.
