AHMEDABAD, India, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Two girls were killed and more than 40 trapped when their residential school building collapsed in the west Indian state of Gujarat on Friday, a top police officer said.

"Students are being rescued from below the debris," B.K. Jha, police chief of Surat city, where the incident occurred in an adjoining village, told Reuters.

The three-storey building, 300 km (185 miles) south of the state's main city, Ahmedabad, houses about 150 girls and 20 teachers. The injured students were being rushed to hospital, the officer said.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.
