DHAKA, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Six people were killed when two boats sank in a storm in a Bangladesh river, and more than a dozen were missing, a police officer said on Tuesday.

The accident occured in the Meghna river near Narsingdi town, 80 km (50 miles) from Dhaka, on Monday, the officer said.

Rain and strong winds have been swept Bangladesh for two days, triggered by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, which also set off a water surge along the coast, officials said.

About 30 people were injured in the Cox's Bazar area after the water surge hit their mud houses.

Authorities have ordered fishing boats to return to shore and bigger vessels to stay close to harbour, ahead of more bad weather forecast for the next two days.

Ferry services between Dhaka and the southern districts have been suspended, affecting thousands of families intending to travel for the Muslim Eid al-Fitr festival.
