RAMADI, Iraq, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Iraqi troops and police in the western province of Anbar killed 63 insurgents during a two -hour long battle on Tuesday, a local official said.

Ahmad al-Dulaimi, chief of staff at the governor's office, said the fighting started when insurgents launched an attack on a local police station and the governor's residence in Ramadi, capital of restive Anbar.

He said three policemen were injured in the attack. The U.S. military, which has a base in Ramadi, could not confirm the figures.

Last month, tribal leaders said they had killed 55 al Qaeda fighters in a battle in Anbar. The U.S. military did not confirm those figures either.

U.S. and Iraqi forces regularly battle foreign fighters in Anbar they say are linked to al Qaeda and other Sunni rebels.
