BANGKOK, 15 October 2009 (IRIN) - Thousands of people have
been evacuated from Vietnam's northern provinces as the country braces for the arrival of tropical storm Parma, which wrought devastation in the Philippines, on 14 October. The storm is expected to
make landfall on the northern coastline late in the evening with wind speeds of up to 61km per hour, and provincial authorities have already evacuated nearly 30,000 people from at-risk areas,
according to a 14 October report by the government's Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control. http://www.ccfsc.org.vn/ccfsc/?module=102&nid=1375&sid=NDMP "North-Central and North-East
provinces can expect moderate to heavy rain with a risk of landslides and flash floods," it stated, adding that ships had been recalled and banned from heading out to sea. Tropical storm Ketsana
hit Vietnam on 29 September, killing at least 163 people and causing extensive damage to agricultural crops and buildings, according to the UN. ey/mw© IRIN. All rights reserved. More
