*ORAKZAI - Islamist militants ambushed and killed eight Pashtun tribesmen in the Orakzai region in the northwest on Thursday after they left a jirga, or tribal council, held to devise a strategy to evict militants from the area, a senior government official said.

*BAJAUR - Jets fighters and helicopter gunships bombed militant hideouts in the Bajaur region on the Afghan border, killing nine fighters, a paramilitary force official said. The army says more than 1,000 militants have been killed in offensive in Bajaur since August. There is no independent verification of that casualty estimate.

*SWAT - Residents of the Swat Valley northwest of the capital found the headless body of a policeman kidnapped by Taliban militants three days ago, police said.
