Indonesia says has no plans to ban Islamic sect

JAKARTA, June 10 (Reuters) - Indonesia's vice president said the government does not plan to ban Ahmadiyya, a sect branded by many Muslims as "heretical", and denied authorities had been too soft on a militant Islamic group blamed for attacks. Ahmadiyya can continue to exist in Indonesia, and its followers are allowed to worship in their homes and mosques, but the sect must not preach or try to convert others, Vice President Jusuf Kalla told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday. "No, they (the government) have no plan to ban Ahmadiyya," provided it follows the law, Kalla said. (Reporting by Sara Webb, Ed Davies, and Olivia Rondonuwu; Editing by Jerry Norton)
