A rumbling volcano in East Java has begun to send out thick columns of sulphur and carbon dioxide gas since Saturday, sparking fears of an imminent eruption, the head of the Centre for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said.

Heavy rain have caused floods in Indonesia's Riau province, with water levels up to 1.5 metres in two districts, displacing around 7,600 families, a rescue official said.
