BAGHDAD, July 14 (Reuters) - A big car bomb killed at least one person and reduced an apartment building to rubble in a Shi'ite district of southern Baghdad on Saturday, Iraq police said.

Police said a parked minivan filled with explosives blew up next to the residential building. It was unclear how many people were inside. Local residents helped clear debris as firefighters doused fierce flames from burning cars.

Undated handout image of Khalid al-Mashadani, who is believed to be the most senior Iraqi in the Sunni Islamist al Qaeda. Al-Mashadani, who was caught this month, has told his U.S. military interrogators a prominent al Qaeda-led group is just a front and its leader fictitious, a military spokesman said on July 18, 2007. Brigadier-General Kevin Bergner told a news conference that Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq, which was purportedly set up last year, did not exist.
