BAGHDAD, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Gunmen kidnapped 10 members of a tribal group fighting al Qaeda as they were returning to their home town in Diyala from Baghdad on Sunday, relatives of the victims said.

The group belong to the Diyala Salvation Council, a body formed by different sects in the province to fight al Qaeda.

One of the relatives said some of those kidnapped had contacted them to inform the families of their abduction just north of Baghdad's Shaab district, adding one had been shot as he tried to resist the militants.

It was unclear what his condition was.

Interior ministry and police sources had no immediate information on the abduction.

The group had met with a tribal advisor for Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Saturday inside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.

Tribal leaders and some insurgent groups in Diyala have joined the U.S. and Iraqi security forces in trying to eradicate al Qaeda from Diyala, a religiously mixed province that has consistently seen major sectarian violence in the past few years.
