JENIN, West Bank, July 2 (Reuters) - Israeli troops killed a Palestinian gunman from President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement on Monday in a raid in the West Bank.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said soldiers had shot the gunman during an overnight raid in a refugee camp near the West Bank city of Jenin, a militant stronghold.

"He had an M-16 (assault rifle) with a telescopic sight," the spokeswoman said. "During the incident, an explosive charge was thrown and the Israeli force came under fire."

Palestinian security sources said the 25-year-old was a member of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the Western-backed Fatah movement.

Citing security concerns, Israel has said it would continue operations against Fatah gunmen in the West Bank.

Salam Fayyad, prime minister in the emergency government that Abbas formed after Hamas Islamists seized control of the Gaza Strip, has said Israeli raids in the West Bank undermine Fatah's intention to disarm gunmen in the occupied territory.
