Two Turkish climbers freeze to death in blizzard

ANKARA, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Two climbers froze to death and two were rescued while scaling a mountain in central Turkey, the state Anatolian news agency reported on Tuesday. The four students, members of a university climbing club, were caught in a blizzard late on Monday at an altitude of 3,400 metres while climbing Demirkazik mountain in Nigde province. At 3,756 metres (12,323 feet), Demirkazik is one of the highest peaks of the Taurus range, southeast of the capital and bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Turkey has many mountain ranges and weather conditions are generally severe during the winter months. Anatolian said a total of 40 Turkish climbers had died in accidents in Turkey and abroad over the past 50 years.
