Kenya police say 12 killed in land dispute

NAIROBI, March 3 (Reuters) - Twelve people were shot, hacked or burned to death near in the latest of a series of bloody property disputes to plague the Mount Elgon area near the Kenya-Uganda border, police said on Monday. "As a result, 12 people were killed ... Ten houses were burned to ashes and six people were seriously injured," police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said in a statement. The Mount Elgon region has been the site of violent feuds over land among sub-clans of the Kalenjin tribe, long preceding the waves of ethnic conflict that struck Kenya after President Mwai Kibaki's election in a disputed Dec. 27 vote.
