BERLIN, Jan 4 (Reuters) - About 100,000 displaced people in Kenya's Northern Rift Valley face starvation after the eruption of violence in the last few days, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday.

The body said, however, it planned to start distributing food soon through the Red Cross.

WFP workers were on their way to the Rift Valley city of Eldoret to hand over beans and lentils to the Red Cross from store houses, it said in a statement released by its Berlin office. Cooking oil was also available in the port of Mombasa.

Protests and ethnic violence in Kenya following the re-election of President Mwai Kibaki in a disputed poll have killed more than 300 people in the last week.

Eldoret is in the fertile Rift Valley about 300 km (200 miles) north of Nairobi and on Tuesday about 30 members of Kibaki's Kikuyu community died when a mob torched a nearby church.

"The biggest problem for lorries containing WFP food is reaching western Kenya," WFP said.

"Practically all WFP transport in Kenya -- whether it is heading to western Kenya or Uganda or Sudan -- has ground to a halt in the last few days due to the security situation."

About 15 trucks were stuck in Nairobi, a further 60 in other cities. Each truck contains about 34 tonnes of food.

In addition, UN Humanitarian Air Service flights had been cancelled, said the WFP. Kenya has been a centre for aid agency operations for several countries in the area. (Reporting by Madeline Chambers)
