JERUSALEM, April 5 (Reuters) - Israeli troops shot a man dead in the West Bank on Thursday, an army spokeswoman said, adding that a military investigation has been launched.

Israeli media said the man was a Palestinian. The spokeswoman said his identity was unknown and it was unclear whether he was armed.

The soldiers had been patrolling an area several miles from the Palestinian city of Jericho when they spotted three suspicious-looking men walking, she said. The troops called for them to stop and fired into the air after they refused.

The soldiers repeated their calls to stop and then fired at one of the men and wounded him. Troops treated him but he died before they could take him to hospital, the spokeswoman said. The other two men were detained for questioning, she said.
