Residents evacuate after blast in Mozambique city

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Residents near Beira, Mozambique's second biggest city, have been forced to evacuate after a series of explosions at a government armoury. Authorities had no details on casualties after the blasts on Friday which lasted about three hours, South Africa's Sapa news agency reported. Military officials said the incident was triggered by high temperatures. A similar accident in March killed 105 people and sent rockets and artillery shells raining down on residential areas around Mozambique's capital, Maputo. This is about the fifth time this year that state munitions have blown up in this way. Mozambicans have blamed the government for failing to dispose of tonnes of weaponry left over from the country's civil war in the 1970s and 1980s. Officials have in the past also cited high temperatures as the cause of the explosions.
