N'DJAMENA, June 10 (Reuters) - President Idriss Deby appeared on Sunday to tone down Chad's resistence to a possible U.N. or European military force on its volatile eastern border with Sudan's Darfur region.

After meeting new French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, Deby was asked by journalists about the possiblity of U.N. blue helmets or European troops being deployed, and replied: "Why not?". Chad has previously favoured deploying only an international force of police to the area.

Billy Abdi, from Kenya, takes a bath after working in the sand banks near a river embankment in Rajaf, 5 km (3.1 miles) outside southern Sudan's capital Juba, June 27, 2007. The north-south peace deal gave the semi-autonomous government of southern Sudan a 50 percent share of oil revenues from wells in the south, but the government says that is not enough to meet the region's enormous development needs.
