JERUSALEM, June 13 (Reuters) - Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak claimed victory on Wednesday in the leadership race for Israel's Labour Party over his challenger, former intelligence chief Ami Ayalon.

"I take office as the chairman of the Labour Party ... I have been chosen to lead, but I intend to do so together with Ami and the other wonderful people in this party," Barak said in his victory speech.

As votes were being counted, Israel Radio estimated 53 percent for Barak and 47 percent for Ayalon. Earlier exit polls predicted a narrower Barak victory.

Fatima Zak (L), 39, holds a Koran as Ruda Habib, 30, stands beside her during their remand extension hearing in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba June 14, 2007. A pregnant Palestinian mother of eight and her niece told Israeli interrogators they planned a double suicide bombing in Israel after they were detained last month, Israel's Shin Bet security service said on Wednesday. Citing what it said were confessions the two women made after their arrest trying to leave the Gaza Strip, it said Zak and Habib were recruited by militant group Islamic Jihad and applied to enter Israel for medical treatment.
