BRUSSELS, July 12 (Reuters) - A top European Union official said on Thursday she was "cautiously optimistic" Libya shared the EU's aim of reaching a deal on the fate of six medics facing the death sentence for infecting children with HIV.

"I am cautiously optimistic that we have reached a point where we all want to see a positive outcome to this matter," EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said in a statement which noted that she had held contacts with Libyan authorities on the matter earlier in the day.
