EU president Germany criticises Zimbabwe for arrests

BERLIN, March 14 (Reuters) - EU president Germany expressed its concern on Wednesday about developments in Zimbabwe and called for the immediate release of all opposition activists detained over the weekend.

Images of battered Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai appearing in court on Tuesday have fuelled world outrage over a crackdown on political protests by President Robert Mugabe's government.

"The (EU presidency) learned with great concern of the serious injuries of opposition leaders caused by their mistreatment," EU president Germany said in a statement.

Germany said it was aware of the release of 14 opposition members but called for the instant release of all others who were arrested during a prayer gathering on Sunday of the Save Zimbabwe campaign.

Sunday's arrests, which occurred as Tsvangirai and other opposition supporters attempted to attend a prayer vigil, came as Zimbabwe faced a deepening economic crisis with inflation at more than 1,700 percent, unemployment of 80 percent and frequent shortages of food, fuel and foreign exchange.
