DUBAI, March 14 (Reuters) - A key Iraqi Sunni militant group said on Wednesday it had captured an Iraqi brigadier general and posted copies of Ministry of Defence credentials that identified him as a deputy director but did not describe him as an officer.

Jamal Rasheed Mohammad Ali appeared wearing civilian clothes in all of the identification cards posted by the Ansar al-Sunna group on a Web site used by Sunni Muslim insurgent groups.

His Iraqi and Multi-National Forces credentials indicated he was employed by the Ministry of Defence but did not say if he was an officer or a civilian.

"Where is (Prime Minister Nuri) al-Maliki to save him from us? Enough of the disgrace you live in, repent to the Almighty so that you and your family can be safe," the group said addressing Iraqi officers.

"He is now in our grip being interrogated," said the group of the man which it described as "senior officer ... working under the American command".

Ansar al-Sunna is a Sunni Muslim militant group that has claimed several abductions and killings since the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The group said he was abducted in an ambush in the western half of Baghdad known as Kark. It did not say if it has made any demands for his release.

Earlier this month a group linked to Iraq's wing of al Qaeda abducted and killed at least 14 policemen.

The self-styled Islamic State in Iraq said then it had demanded that the Shi'ite-led government hand over officers who had allegedly raped a Sunni Muslim woman for their release but its demands were ignored.
