PARIS, Feb 14 (Reuters) - French drugs group Sanofi-Aventis <SASY.PA> said on Thursday it was teaming up with Danish laboratory Statens Serum Institut to develop a new vaccine against tuberculosis.

"The current medical arsenal is inadequate for fighting tuberculosis," Wayne Pisano, head of Sanofi's vaccines division, said in a statement.

"Sanofi Pasteur and SSI are joining forces to develop a vaccine that may have a major impact on global health by preventing a disease that currently infects one person in the world every second."

The only TB vaccine in use in the world today is over 80 years old and is mainly effective in protecting infants, Sanofi noted. (Reporting by Nick Antonovics, editing by Will Waterman)
