(updates with nationality of dead soldier) KABUL, Jan 15 (Reuters) - A British soldier was killed on Monday during an attack on an insurgent base in southern Afghanistan, Britain's Ministry of Defence said. Several other soldiers were wounded in the fighting in Helmand province, NATO said. "Close air support was requested and targeted the insurgents," who had attacked the NATO troops from various positions, it said. Two NATO soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan this year. A British member of the force was killed on Saturday. Last year was the bloodiest in Afghanistan since U.S.-led forces overthrew the Taliban in 2001. More than 4,000 people were killed, most of them Taliban militants, but also including nearly 170 foreign soldiers killed in attacks or accidents during operations.
