KABUL, Jan 15 (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Afghanistan on Monday, making his first visit to the country since taking office last month.

Gates plans to meet Afghan government officials as well as U.S. and NATO miliary commanders, whose forces have been battling a resurgent Taliban in the south of the country.

A blood stain is visible on the wall where Mohammad Islam Mohammadi, a member of Afghanistan's parliament, was killed in Kabul January 26, 2007. An unidentified man shot dead a member of Afghanistan's national assembly in Kabul on Friday, a government spokesman said.
