TABLE-EU and U.S. greenhouse gas emissions fall in 2006

(Adds Liechtenstein) April 21 (Reuters) - U.S. and European Union emissions of greenhouse gases fell in 2006, data published in April show, offering some positive news amid a global picture of rising emissions. Globally greenhouse gas emissions are rising at about 3 percent a year, especially because rapid economic growth in China and India is fuelling massive demand for energy from high carbon-emitting coal-fired power plants. The Kyoto Protocol put limits on emissions of greenhouse gases by industrialised countries, expressed as a percentage of emissions averaged between 2008-12 compared to those in a base year which is normally 1990. The U.N. data show that most former communist countries are well within their Kyoto targets, but many west European countries are exceeding theirs. Following is a summary of the data, showing greenhouse gas emissions in millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide for 1990 and 2006, and the percentage change in 2006 compared to the year before and compared to the Kyoto base year. In the final column is the Kyoto target.
