RAMALLAH, West Bank, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday a deal was reached between his Fatah faction and Hamas to stop fighting in the Gaza Strip, and that he hoped it would hold.

"We bless and support this agreement. After one hour, it will take effect," Abbas told reporters in the West Bank city of Ramallah. "We hope all will abide by this agreement."

A previous ceasefire deal broke down within 24 hours and it was unclear whether this one, scheduled to take effect at 2300 local (2100 GMT), would hold.

Jewish leaders from across the globe have decried the sight of six Jews with beards and black hats embracing Iran's president at a conference questioning the Holocaust, believing their gesture hurt the faith. Hirsch, a 51-year-old U.S. citizen by birth who rejected Israeli citizenship, said he was unable to go to Tehran because he lived in Israel.
