BAIDOA, Somalia, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Fighting flared between Somali government troops and Islamist fighters on Wednesday at a long-feared flashpoint of the brewing Horn of Africa war, residents said.

Residents in the Islamist base of Buur Hakaba and the government's forward base in Dayunay said heavy shooting had erupted between the sides on the front, located between the two towns. The fighting was occurring about 25 km (15 miles) southeast of Baidoa, the government's surrounded stronghold.

Somalia's President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed speaks to Reuters during an interview in his Nairobi residence in this August 21, 2005 file photo. Three wily old soldiers who know each other only too well from years at the heart of conflict and power-play across the Horn of Africa are once again pitting their military wits in the Somalia war. Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, his ally Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf, and their mutual arch-foe -- Somali Islamist leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys -- are the key players in a flare-up many fear could spread across the region.
