Gaza power plant shuts down turbine

GAZA, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Gaza's main power plant shut down one of its two turbines on Sunday because of a fuel shortage following Israel's closing of the territory's border crossings in response to Palestinian rocket attacks. U.N., European Union and Palestinian officials said the second turbine would cease operation within hours. The impact of the initial shutdown was not immediately clear. Power outages have become commonplace in the Gaza Strip in recent months after Israel declared the area a "hostile entity" and began restricting fuel supplies.
