JOHANNESBURG, May 21 (Reuters) - Forty-two people have died in attacks on African immigrants since anti-foreigner violence began on May 11, police said late on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said a further 16,000 people had been driven from their homes in the xenophobic attacks in Johannesburg squatter camps.

Local residents have attacked foreigners and burnt down shacks, accusing them of stealing their jobs. (Reporting by Gordon Bell; Editing by Jon Boyle)
