(Adds British defence ministry paragraph 3-6)

BASRA, Jan 21 (Reuters) - A roadside bomb killed one British soldier and wounded four on Sunday in northern Basra in southern Iraq, the British military said.

British forces have around 6,000 troops in the oil-rich southern city. One of the wounded was in serious condition, a British spokesman said.

In London, the British defence ministry said the five soldiers were on patrol in a Warrior armoured vehicle in northern Basra when the attack took place.

"The patrol was carrying out routine duties when a suspected roadside bomb detonated. They were travelling on the outskirts of the northern part of the city near the districts of Al Hadi and Al Jezaizah," a ministry statement said.

The death brings to 130 the number of British military personnel who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. (Additional reporting by Jeremy Lovell in London)

An Indian policeman detains a Kashmiri Shia Muslim mourner during the Ashura procession in Srinagar January 28, 2007. Indian police used tear gas and batons on Sunday to disperse Shia Muslims as they marched to mark the death of the Prophet's grandson in Kashmir's main city, wounding more than 20 people, police said. Muslims all over the world mourn the slaying of Imam Hussein, a grandson of Prophet Mohammed during the first ten days of the first Islamic month of Moharram and Ashura is the tenth and concluding day of mourning. Imam Hussein was killed by his political rivals along with 72 companions in Iraq some 1300 years ago.
