BAGHDAD, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Three U.S. Marines died on Wednesday from wounds sustained in combat in Iraq's volatile western Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

The military's statement gave no details of the fighting.

Anbar is the heartland of a three-year-old Sunni Arab insurgency and is the deadliest place in Iraq for U.S. soldiers.

The guerrillas are fighting the Shi'ite-led Iraqi government and U.S.-led forces.

The deaths brought to 2,871 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since U.S.-led forces invaded in March 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein.
