Sudan tells EU envoy to leave - EU Commission

BRUSSELS, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Sudan has told the European Union's envoy to the conflict-torn African country to leave, the bloc's executive arm said on Thursday.

"We received a letter informing the head of the (European Commission's) delegation that he should leave," said Commission spokeswoman Antonia Mochan.

"We are trying to resolve the situation," she added, declining to give further details.

The EU has been trying to help end a conflict in Sudan's Darfur, where this week, government forces surrounded and attacked the region's most volatile camp to flush out rebels they say are behind recent attacks on police.

The African Union force in Darfur has failed to stem the violence despite a 2006 peace deal. International experts estimate some 200,000 people have died and 2.5 million driven from their homes since mostly non-Arab rebels took up arms in early 2003.

Sudanese resident Hassan Idrees sits next to an open water well in the remote village of Saraf Saeed in southeast Sudan, close to the Ethiopian border August 24, 2007. Three of the village's five natural wells have been contaminated in recent weeks by floodwaters. Mustafa Elsayed Elkhalil, health minister for the Al-Gadarif federal state which governs Saraf Saeed, says the water, which is supposed to be a source of life, is the "real source of our health problems".
