Congo's Nkunda rebels sign peace pact with govt

GOMA, Congo, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo loyal to renegade General Laurent Nkunda signed a peace deal on Wednesday with the government and Mai Mai militia to end fighting in the east of the country.

The signing ceremony, which was attended by President Joseph Kabila, followed two weeks of intense negotiations at a peace conference in the eastern town of Goma, which was supported by the United Nations, the European Union and the United States.
