EU backs Hungarian measures against bird flu

BRUSSELS, Jan 26 (Reuters) - EU governments approved on Friday security measures taken by Hungary against the spread of a deadly bird flu virus detected in the southeast of the country this week, saying the outbreak likely stemmed from wild birds. Veterinary experts from the European Union's 27 member countries deemed as sufficient Hungary's steps, which include culling, buffer zones and transport curbs, the executive European Commission said in a statement. "The origin of the virus is still being investigated, with wild birds being considered as a strong possibility," the Commission said, adding that an EU reference laboratory was carrying out tests. It said Hungarian tests on the infected geese showed the presence of the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus.
