April 29 (Reuters) - A British soldier was shot dead while on patrol in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Sunday, a British military spokesman said.

The U.S. military said nine soldiers were killed in Iraq on Friday and Saturday.

Four were killed by roadside bombs in separate attacks south and southeast of Baghdad on Saturday, the military said in a statement.

Three soldiers and two Marines were killed on Friday in combat in western Anbar Province, it said.

Following are the latest figures for military deaths in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003:

U.S.-LED COALITION FORCES:

United States 3,346

Britain 146

Other nations 125

IRAQIS:

Military Between 4,900 and 6,375#

Civilians Between 62,570 and 68,593*

# = Think-tank estimates for military under Saddam Hussein killed during the 2003 war. No reliable official figures have been issued since new security forces were set up in late 2003.

* = From www.iraqbodycount.net (IBC), run by academics and peace activists, based on reports from at least two media sources. IBC says on its Web site that the figure under estimates the true number of casualties.

Students light candles in front of a poster with names of journalists who were slain in Philippines, during a prayer rally in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in Manila May 3, 2007. The Philippines isn't the worst place in the world to be a reporter but it's second only to Iraq. Investigative stories about drug trafficking, gambling and other illegal activities put lives at risk. The media's breathless style of reporting and impassioned commentary is often too much for shady kingpins, particularly in rural areas, where police and military protection can be bought. To match feature PHILIPPINES-MEDIA/KILLINGS.
