JERUSALEM, July 27 (Reuters) - The Israeli army said it launched a wide ranging-investigation on Friday after soldiers commandeered a Palestinian taxi and then shot and wounded an unarmed man near the West Bank City of Hebron.

In a statement, the army said an initial investigation found that the unit ordered the driver and passengers out of the taxi and drove off. While driving, they "identified a suspicious man, fired towards him and identified hitting him".

The soldiers drove on without giving the man medical care or reporting the incident to their commanders.

The man was later treated in an Israeli hospital, the army said. It added that as well as investigating the incident itself, it would hold an examination into the "moral and operational values taught in the battalion that was involved".

Witnessess and medical staff in Daharia named the wounded man as Ashraf Sanamre, a 27-year-old construction worker. He was hit once in the chest and once in the neck, they said.
