N'DJAMENA, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Chad said on Wednesday its army had tracked down and destroyed the remnants of a rebel group involved in fighting earlier this week which shattered a month-old peace deal signed with President Idriss Deby. Fighters from the Union of Forces for Democracy and Development (UFDD), led by former defence minister Mahamat Nouri, clashed with government forces near the border wath Sudan on Monday in fighting which both sides said killed hundreds. "The survivors from this latest fighting were caught (on Wednesday) at Hadjer Marsaine and completely decimated. Mahamat Nouri crossed the border (into Sudan) on foot," the government said in a statement. "The Chadian government calls on Sudan to do everything to find him and return him to Chad ... As far as Chad is concerned the UFDD has been completely destroyed after the fighting at Hadjer Marsaine today," it said. Independent confirmation of Wednesday's fighting or of the extent of rebel losses was not immediately available. Monday's battle, in which both sides claimed to have killed hundreds of enemy combatants, was the heaviest in months in eastern Chad, where up to 3,700 EU peacekeepers are due to start deploying early in the New Year on a mission to protect hundreds of thousands of Chadian and Sudanese refugees.
