Turk suspects may have plotted against Erdogan-report

ISTANBUL, March 9 (Reuters) - Turkish police detained five people suspected of planning an attack against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, Milliyet newspaper said on Monday, without saying how it got the information. Police in the southern province of Adana on Saturday detained a woman with close ties to the military and security forces, Milliyet said. She provided information that led to four more arrests, it said. Investigators believe the female suspect was planning an attack on Erdogan during a weekend campaign rally in the province, the newspaper said. Milliyet reported that Adana Governor Ilhan Atis confirmed the arrests were made, although he would not say whether they were connected to a possible attack on Erdogan. It was not immediately clear if the arrests were connected to the so-called Ergenekon investigation. Almost 90 people, including ex-military officers, are on trial in Istanbul on charges they tried to overthrow Erdogan's government and belonged to a right-wing conspiracy group called Ergenekon. The group allegedly plotted bomb attacks and assassinations to destabilise the government.
