Aug 13 (Reuters) - European Union foreign ministers agreed in principle on Wednesday to send monitors to help supervise a French-brokered ceasefire between Russia and Georgia in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia.

Here are the main elements of a statement issued after the emergency EU meeting.

- "A lasting and peaceful settlement of conflicts in Georgia must be based on full respect of the principles of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity..."

- "The (EU) Council urges the parties to fulfil all their commitments, starting with an effective ceasefire."

- "The EU must be ready to engage, including on the ground, to support all efforts, including those of the United Nations and the OSCE, for a lasting and peaceful settlement of the conflicts in Georgia."

- "It is crucial that all parties respect international humanitarian law and facilitate the access of humanitarian aid to all populations concerned, without any discrimination."
