Israeli troops arrest Syrian in Golan - army

JERUSALEM, April 14 (Reuters) - Israeli soldiers arrested an unarmed Syrian who crossed into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday, a military spokesman said. The suspect was being questioned and may be returned later to Syria, the spokesman said. He had no further details. Israel Radio said the man had infiltrated a border fence by tunneling beneath it. His motive was unclear but did not appear to be linked to any violent intentions, the radio said. Israel captured the Golan, a strategic plateau, from Syria in a 1967 war and annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognised internationally. Syria has demanded a complete Israeli withdrawal from the territory as a condition for making peace. The fortified Golan frontier is generally sealed and monitored by a United Nations observer force. Some of the thousands of Druze who live there are permitted occasionally to cross to the opposite side with the aid of Red Cross officials. (Writing by Allyn Fisher-Ilan; Editing by Angus MacSwan)
