Court ceiling collapses during Turkish plot trial

ISTANBUL, Nov 20 (Reuters) - A court hearing in Turkey into an alleged ultra-nationalist conspiracy to overthrow the government was suspended on Friday after the ceiling partially collapsed, Turkish media reported. There were no reports of injuries and it was not immediately known what caused the ceiling to collapse in the recently built courthouse in Istanbul. The presiding judge suspended the hearing. Some 200 people are on trial in the case against alleged members of the so-called "Ergenekon" network. The defendants are accused of planning bomb attacks and assassinations to foment social unrest and destabilise Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's Islamist-rooted government. Erdogan's critics have said the probe is a political crackdown against the opposition. The widening investigation has at times unnerved financial markets and increased tensions between the government and the powerful military.
