RIYADH, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia urged its ally the United States on Saturday to intervene to end Israel's attack on Gaza.

"Superpowers should take responsibility to stop these attacks," the official Saudi Press Agency reported, citing a telephone conversation between Saudi King Abdallah and U.S. President George W. Bush.

King Abdallah said the attack was a continuation of "Israeli policies of occupation and mistreatment of Palestinians".

The Israeli air strikes on the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip on Saturday killed more than 200 people.

The head of a bloc that groups Washington's Gulf allies described the attacks as "barbaric" and "ugly".

The United States blamed Hamas for breaking a ceasefire and the renewal of violence in Gaza and urged Israel to avoid civilian casualties. (Writing by Daliah Merzaban; Editing by Alison Williams)
