ISTANBUL, Jan 29 (Reuters) - One al Qaeda militant was killed and three others were captured in an operation by Turkish police, broadcaster CNN Turk reported Istanbul governor Muammer Guler as saying.

The police clashed with the militants as they tried to rob a post office branch in Istanbul, and a police officer was lightly wounded, the broadcaster said.

Al Qaeda carried out bomb attacks in Turkey in the past, most notably in 2003 when the militants killed more than 60 people in a series of bombings in Istanbul.

The police declined to give more information.
