Manila lawmakers want left-wing colleague freed

MANILA, June 5 (Reuters) - Philippine lawmakers crossed party lines on Tuesday and endorsed a resolution seeking to free a left-wing labour leader and member of the lower house of Congress from detention.

On Monday, a Manila court allowed Crispin Beltran to attend the last three sessions of the legislature, returning to the House of Representatives for the first time since his arrest in February 2006 on rebellion charges.

Last week, the Supreme Court ordered the lower court to throw out rebellion charges against six left-wing members of Congress, including Beltran, for an alleged conspiracy with rogue soldiers and politicians to overthrow President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

"There is no probable cause to indict Beltran for rebellion," said a group of administration and opposition congressmen in a resolution, noting efforts by Arroyo's government to appeal against the high court's decision.

The justice department opposed moves to free Beltran and dismiss the rebellion charges against him and five left-wing lawmakers.

While Beltran has been under detention at a state hospital for about 15 months, his five colleagues locked themselves up at the Congress building for 71 day until they were allowed to post bail.

The House is holding its last three sessions this week before adjourning. Congressional elections were held on May 14 and the new congressmen will be taking office on June 30.
